1. Have the school 8D checked out by a competent repair person. (You've gotten good recommendations about this so far.) Hopefully this won't cost you much money, and there's probably little luck trying to get your school district to pick up the bill. (It's worth a shot though.) 2. Once you decide on a college, ask the horn prof if he/she has any opinions on good intermediate level horns that will get you through your undergrad degree. You might get a great deal on a used horn that a graduating senior is selling because he/she is getting an equipment upgrade. Don't worry about getting a premier-level boutique horn yet. By the time you've gotten through your undergrad, your playing will have matured enough that the expensive horn you want today may not be the expensive horn you'll want in 4 years. 3. Start saving money for an "upgrade" horn now. Being a starving student isn't easy and saving money may sound impossible, but do it anyway--every little bit counts and four years is a long time. If you can, put the money somewhere interest bearing, like a certificate of deposit. When you are ready for your upgrade, you can sell your intermediate horn to a new freshman! (And if you've burnt out in four years and never want to see the horn again, you'll have a great down payment saved up for a new car or something.) Good luck!
