Thanks for the link, but the article is as other articles, just so-so-insight &
info.

And, if principal players act like whores, hunting for any extra job,
they deserve no better.

But I might remember you, that responsible principal players do not
accept every gig, not matter if very very well paid. They have to respect
the demand set on them by their own orchestra. And they have to be
responsible for that main job.

That makes the difference with "tutti-players".

One example about costs:
right after returning from Manchester IHS symposium about 20 years ago, I
received an
urgent call from Salzburg - Vienna Phil - if I could save two TV transmissed
performances of "A Death House" by Janacek, Abbado conducting. The premiere
be next day direct in worldwide TV, no rehearsal be possible.

Well, I accepted, as I was last chance for a replacement.
Janacek is not very popular & I was the only available solohorn
having played the piece, but many years ago under Raffael Kubelik.
Remember, Janacek has strange rhythmical
patterns, strange harmonics, nothing to be anticipated. So I did it. We had not
talked
about the money yet. I did the 2nd performance two days later. No money talk
again.
So they called me the next day how much I would charge them. I left it to them.
They sent me 5.000.-DM (after taxes about 3.250.- USD back then), same as
their fellow
would have received, if he not had broken his left thumb during a soccer game
after dress rehearsal ....

Moral: if you do not hunt for the extra jobs, they will come to you & ask you &
offer a generous fee.

Moral 2 & reality: this will not be cheaper than hiring a permanent first horn,
even they
will save all the social security expenses.

But it is different regarding tutti players. But who points upon tutti players
in case of
a mistake ? They jst point to the first horn.
