I agree. The Live from Lincoln Center crew remains the gold standard.

As for the music...

That young man playing first horn... If he sticks with it, he just might
amount to something.

It's astonishing to think that DC has been principal since I was in elementary
school. People my age are now grandparents. Plenty of people born the year he
started the gig now have children in college.

I have to admit that one of the reasons I tuned into the program was to see
(and hear) how he's doing. The only time I ever saw Willie Mays play was when
he was with the Mets, at the end of his career. I'm sorry I did. My memory is
forever of a slow, tired, slightly broken down old ballplayer. (Imagine
someone who's only memories of Brett Favre will be from this season.)

On the other hand, I saw Duke Ellington and his orchestra a year or two before
he died. It was wonderful. Duke was as gracious, suave, and sophisticated as
ever. And the band -- including legends like Johnny Hodges and Paul Gonsalves
-- sounded terrific.

So, I was wondering... Was this going to be a Willie Mays evening or an
Ellington one?

Definitely Ellington.
