The only clockwork springs I have ever seen were used in my Husbands Bass
Trombone (Olds P24G).

The springs are located right under the bearing cap and can be tensioned. He
has them set at the lightest tension possible and has only had 1 break on him.
Even so, he always carries spares.

More annoying to him is that the valves were designed with internal bumpers.
The bumpers are O-rings, and the O-rings split quite frequently. The only way
to replace them is to take the valve apart. He's had to do it so often it takes
only 5 minutes for him to get his trombone up and playing again - still
annoying though. Yes, if it happens during a concert, he knows enough
alternates to be able to work around the split bumper. The valve works, it's
just noisy.
