I have had ultrasonics blow holes through spots of a horn that had some
red-rot.  You know, the pink spots where the zinc has rotted out of the brass
alloy.
I can't think of any reason to use acid on the bell of a horn.
Simple Green is good for cutting grease, I use it for cleaning some of the
old greasy crusty machines that I've bought at auctions.  The dang stuff stinks
like H.E. double hockey sticks though!!!   Probably a lot more grease cutting
firepower than you need for cleaning a horn, it will cut the grease, not the
corrosion.  Get the same results with much better smell using dish soap.
I imagine if Kaboom brightens the brass, it probably contains some kind of
acid, maybe citric acid?  Check out the ingredients label.  If it does, it's
probably a good idea to follow up by neutralizing the acid, otherwise it tends
to promote corrosion.  A solution of water and baking soda, or Windex will work.
Really, for the most part all you need is soap and water.  Just do it often
enough.

PS, does anybody know why my posts always come out with lots of extra question
marks in them? (I only typed one right there!)
