I have seen some lacquer problems where large areas peeled off for no apparent reason. I'd say that kind of thing is probably caused by insufficient de-greasing before lacquering. As Hans mentioned, if you get it refinished right away before the metal gets pitted, you have some hope of a good result. It usually doesn't turn out too well to try to relacquer a badly pitted bell. You end up with a thin piece of foil.
