The details of negotiations between musicians and management are rarely made
public regardless of what union is involved. It is frustrating to read vague
reports, but to make details public during negotiations would make dealings
difficult for those involved. The important point is that for the Detroit
Symphony to remain a major orchestra, pay and working conditions must be
competitive with other orchestras of similar caliber. The work of the
musician's unions over the years have made it possible for Americans to enjoy
some of the finest symphony orchestras in the world. I wish all the best for
the musicians of the Detroit Symphony. Even though I have never heard a live
concert by the DSO, their influence on musical culture in the US over the years
has been significant.

CORdially,
Luke Zyla, second horn
West Virginia Symphony Orchestra
