Well! We do digress don't we! How about referring back to the original question and I'd like some thoughts from the acknowledged teachers on the list. Here is another question: is latent musicianship discernible? As an examiner I have heard many an average performance of standard rep. concertos in the higher grades (and passed them) but occasionally superbly musical playing of lesser pieces from younger players in the lower grades. As for perfect pitch, Tony Halstead once had a car crash and he told me it 'displaced' his perfect pitch temporarily by a semitone. How awkward is that? I do agree with William, relative pitch is absolutely essential. Ralph R.
