Well! We do digress don't we! How about referring back to the original  
question and I'd like some thoughts from the acknowledged teachers on  
the list. Here is another question: is latent musicianship  
discernible? As an examiner I have heard many an average performance  
of standard rep. concertos in the higher grades (and passed them) but  
occasionally superbly musical playing of lesser pieces from younger  
players in the lower grades.

As for perfect pitch, Tony Halstead once had a car crash and he told  
me it 'displaced' his perfect pitch temporarily by a semitone. How  
awkward is that? I do agree with William, relative pitch is absolutely  
essential.
