For example, I can't hum a perfectly tune D on my
horn before playing it, but I know where it should be thanks to the Franz
Strauss Concerto and the opening note on the horn.
I would never claim to have perfect pitch, but if ever I try to play something
on natural horn with the wrong crook, I get a very nasty surprise! This implies
that I must have some absolute idea of where the note should be before I try to
play it.
