Hi All,

When I was a Sophmore in high school, I signed up for the music theory
class. There were only 8 of us and our teacher decided on a pitch
experiment. Each class time instead of coming into the room, we lined up
outside the door. He played a note on the piano and if you got it right you
could enter, if not you went to the back of the line. Each person got 2
tries. If you started at the back of the line you had a better chance! He
began with the notes from middle C to the next C up - white notes only at
first, then adding black notes. As we got better, he widened the range. As
a result I can't listen to a piano concerto without saying "Oh, that's an
F#". But my relative pitch did improve, and after playing in the orchestra
for many years, I memorized the sound of the tuning note so that I can sing
it accurately most of the time. Any pitch heard and recognized once in a
day sets me up for knowing what all the other ones are. Thanks to my music
teacher I guess.

Elaine
