Fortunately I do not have tinnitus, but a friend of mine developed it and had 
good success with "tinnitus retraining therapy", where you retrain your brain 
to ignore the tinnitus.  For him, it involved listening with earphones to a 
particular Bach piece for hours every day for months.  Some of the retraining 
protocols involve more expensive patient-specific recordings.  He says that now 
even though the tinnitus is still present he is able to ignore it completely, 
and has gone from despair back to a normal life.
