Lawrence, Again, I agree. When I was looking for as you Brits call it a new mouthpipe, I was investigating one of Kenny Bett's Lawson mouthpipes. I had a student that purchased a very nice Holton 179 that had been customized by John Kowalchuk, and John put a Lawson pipe on it. It has a very nice response and slots very well. That was one reason why I was thinking about a Lawson pipe, but after getting a lot of input from various makers and speaking at length with Paul Navarro, I decided on another Alex pipe.
When I bought my first Alex, I had only two brands of horn that I was considering, Paxman and Alex. If the correct scenario came along again, I'd buy a Paxman. I bought the Alex because the bore was larger than the Paxman. I guess that it's kind of the difference between buying an American Ford or Chevy and the arguments between those that are brand loyal. Personally, since I own and go to car shows with a classic Chevy convertible, you can guess that I'm not in the Ford camp, lol... One final note not pertaining to horn playing...HURRY Spring! In Detroit we had 10 inches of the white pestilence Sunday evening and yuck! I'm sick of winter. Let's not be silly, both Paxman and Alex make superb instruments - it's a religious thing really. I have mates who play Paxmans and there's always the banter between us - things like "Yes that sounds good, sounds a bit like a horn doesn't it?" and "That'll be great when you've had it mended". I have two Alex 103's, my main instrument is about 12 years old, (maybe a bit older - I've lost track of time) and the spare is over 50 years old and is in need of some cosmetic attention but both play superbly - I've no excuse really. I think what Walt said about changing Alex parts for Alex parts applies equally to Paxmans (although it seems that over in the states you have some excellent makers who produce extra replacement parts (bells, mouthpipes - sorry, leadpipes I think you call them). Hope you find what's needed. Cheers, Lawrence On 22 February 2011 14:37, Walter Lewis <[email protected]> wrote: > Lawrence, > > I concur!
