I attended a chamber music performance a few years ago, something alongside a
regular summer residence of a very major orchestra. I think it opened with -
shall we say - a "dry" ensemble. Then the performers for the Brahm's Trio came
out and sat down. The horn player - the rising young star of said major
orchestra - took a test blow and realized he/she had not emptied beforehand.
The emptying was done prominently and vigorously, with a good shake of the
third valve slides. There were audible gasps from the audience.
