I will de-lurk (loved that term since i read it on this list recently) to say
this: I own an ambronze Lawson both bell and body, and love it. At the Indiana
Symposium those several years ago i puchased a used nickel bronze Lawson bell
just for the experimentation. The difference was enormous. The tone with the
nickel bronze bell was absolutely dead to my ear. To say the difference was
that of playing in a church sanctuary vs playing in my carpeted bedroom is
extreme, but the difference was noticeable to say the least.

I am not saying that the Lawson nickel bronze horns don't ring or
project...maybe they do if both bell and body are the same, but I can tell you
that the bell makes a difference on a horn.

I also own an Elkhart N series Conn 28d and had it delacquered several years
ago by a respected technician who posts often on this list. He told me at the
time that in his experience delacquering may make the horn seem "deader" to my
ear as I play, but that it may well seem to project more to a listener in the
rear of the hall. Bottom line? I have no clue. Maybe the nickel bronze bell I
bought (and subsequently sold at the Tallahassee Symposium) did in fact
project, but I just couldn't hear it.

We were asked for comments on this issue, and these are mine.
