Ed,

I placed a pre-publication order for the book when it first came to my
attention a few months ago and had it in hand sometime early this week. The
reason I ask about the editions of the Pettitt is that fact that I am
already a couple of chapters into the book (with your fine introductory
piece) and somewhere in my reading so far I came across the fact for the
first time that the Pettitt had a revised edition in the 80's. I enough of
a glutton for anything that smacks of serious writing on Brain (or any
other horn player, for that matter) that I would seriously consider
augmenting my bookshelf with a second copy of the Pettitt if it has
substantial revisions and/or additions. I wish I could say that I will be
at the Symposium, but that is not happening, but you can convey my
compliments to Bill Lynch. I have corresponded with him a few times in the
past about unissued Brain recordings that he was trying to locate and am
very grateful to him for the work he and his co-author have put in.

While you're at it, you can also say hi to Bill Scharnberg from me, too.

Thanks,

Peter Hirsch

biography that's just been published? >(Dennis Brain: A Life in Music). It
was written with Pettitt's encouragement. If you're going to the Symposium
in >San Francisco, the book will be available at the one-time special price
of $16.00 and one of the co-authors, Bill >Lynch, who's presenting a
program on hitherto unknown recordings of Brain, will be signing the books.
