Some things are counter intuitive but are true, despite our experiences. Einstein is a great example of someone who showed us that.
I'm not denying your experience, or that there were pitch differences. What I am disagreeing with, is WHY. Distance cannot change the pitch. Ask any physicist. However, temperature can change it - so unless you had a thermometer on your stand, horn, etc. your perception of temperature may not have been what actually was. Also, there could be other factors involved - but it cannot be distance from the stage.
