I'll freely admit I've never done an offstage call.  Hans mentioned that 
the sound appears flatter and flatter the farther away from the stage you are.  
Could it be that whatever stuff is between you and the stage, be it curtains, 
around corners or etc., could be slightly slowing the speed of sound?  Closer 
to the stage, less stuff slowing the speed of sound down?
    BTW, this is a well known phenomenon among trumpet players too, so a horn 
only explanation doesn't work.
