I sent a note about our discussion of retuning off-stage
instruments sharp to Diana Deutsch.  She has done
some interesting research on the psychology of musical
perception.  Here is her response.

Dear Brian,

Thanks for your interesting note. I'm also puzzled by this claim 
concerning the tuning of horns, and can't think of an explanation. The 
high frequency components of the sounds would be more attenuated in a 
large room (as of course you are aware) but I don't see that tuning 
sharp should compensate for this. If you come across a possible 
solution, I'd be very interested to hear about it.
