I sent a note about our discussion of retuning off-stage instruments sharp to Diana Deutsch. She has done some interesting research on the psychology of musical perception. Here is her response.
Dear Brian, Thanks for your interesting note. I'm also puzzled by this claim concerning the tuning of horns, and can't think of an explanation. The high frequency components of the sounds would be more attenuated in a large room (as of course you are aware) but I don't see that tuning sharp should compensate for this. If you come across a possible solution, I'd be very interested to hear about it. Best wishes, Diana Deutsch You can find some of her auditory demonstrations here http://www.philomel.com Gotta go, Cabbage _______________________________________________ post: [email protected] unsubscribe or set options at https://pegasus.memphis.edu/cgi-bin/mailman/options/horn/archive%40jab.org
