Hi everyone, It's hard to believe, but after nearly 2 years of work, the "big one" is only a week away. I was up at the school the other day and the weather was really nice. There was sun and and a cooling bit of fog coming in but not enveloping the school. This is common for June, the fog is actually worse in July and August, but as you know, this year is not a 'common year' wherever you are.
Even with the sun, the temperatures are predicted to be in the 60's and 70's, so for those of you seeking refuge from summer heat, this is the place to be. Yes, Mark Twain did say that "the coldest winter i ever spent was a summer in San Francisco." But he came from Missouri. We are having a long delayed summer here, assuming we do have a summer, that is. Right now we seem to be stuck in April, which is usually very pleasant, but this year it rained and rained.... My advice is to bring layers. Shorts will be OK some of the time, but most people will probably opt for long pants. Be sure to bring a sweater and maybe a light jacket, especially if you are planning to go out at night and/or see the Genghis Barbie group down on the wharf on Thursday. What it boils down to is this. It will not be oppressively hot or cold. It won't get below the 50s at night. There may be fog coming and going from the nearby ocean. There will be the smell of salt in the air. Light layers are the way to go. Check the extended forecasts on the web for SF. OK, now for the other thing. Since we will be having a large number of people wanting to play at times, we would like those of you who can to bring a portable stand. I don't actually know how many are going to be at the workshop and i won't until the end of the event. That is the way it always goes. So it will be helpful to have some extra stands available for the participant ensemble rehearsals. One last thing. There is no playing allowed n the dorms. We are occupying a lot of rooms on certain floors, but I don't know who else is in there and the dorm people are not the most sympathetic sort that i have ever run into. That is why I am keeping the Creative Arts building open until midnight on most nights. It is open until ten every night. The Creative Arts building is open to the public. The teachers and school people have been warned to stay away, but there may be 'badge-less people' in the building. My staff and I will be keeping an eye on things but there will not be 'air tight' security. We do have a secure room in the building and we will be checking badges as much as we can. You should ID any horn (case) that is with you. Each badge will have a number and we will have stickers for your case to match that number. Just be aware and careful. Wow, just a week to go!
