Thanks, Dana, David (and others),

I did immediately think it was a cimbasso, but the strange
configuration was what made me less than sure. All the times I have
seen images, they looked a lot like the ones you linked to, with the
bell over the shoulder like a la marching band. The camera angle that
seemed always be shooting with someone between the camera and the
cimbasso player didn't help.

I do believe that it is indeed a cimbasso, though it seems the player
preferes to have the bell down rather than up. Here's a link to a site in
