Just a thought - how much heat would be transferred to metal under these plating conditions? Would it be similar to the cryo process - in that the returning to normal room temp that allows the metal to relax further (i.e. the heating up of the brass) and not the freezing of the brass - if the application of the gold/silver includes heating the metal up then this might be relaxing the brass?
