Here's a copy of an exercise from the Anton Horner Primary Studies book I'm
working on:

http://www.kbnj.com/music/HornerP13Var4.pdf

It's at the bottom of Page 13, Variation 4. If you've got the book, you
needn't bother with the link above.

My question concerns the phrase that starts in measure 5 and is four bars
long. Please note that I am playing exclusively on the F horn because I
prefer it. In measure #6, the notes B-flat, C, D, C, B-flat - it feels
easier to play if I hold down the first valve for the B-flat and then
continue to hold it down for the C and the D and the following C and B-flat.
I seem to "clam" more often if I take the C, and D, or both with no valves.

Is my fingering better, worse, or no different in the abstract? From what I
know of the overtone series and the horn, taking C and D as open means I'm
playing one partal lower than if I'm using the first valve. The C and D are
concert F and G - taken open, the F is partial #8 and the G partial #9;
taken with the first valve held down, they are partials #9 and 10,
respectively. I am concerned only because the pitch written C, concert F,
is not listed in the fingering chart in the Horner as being "legal" with the
first valve held down. (And if I'm wrong about the partials, please correct
me, of course.)

To my ears, both sound in tune at this point in my young horn career. I am
playing by myself so there is no issue of tuning with a piano or anything
else. All advice and comments are welcomed, including "it makes no
difference for now, stop worrying and play the fingering you prefer."

Question #2: Do they still make a professional quality single horn, since
most people prefer doubles? Do any of the single horns here:

sed%20French%20Horns

strike anyone as possibly a good value and a reasonable first horn purchase
for me? At this point, I feel I'd like to get a decent single horn and
learn to play it well before spending a goodly amount of money on a double.
My current horn is a borrowed Conn 6D with a 7BW mouthpiece, and I live only
about an hour away from Dillon and have had very good experience with them
so far buying instruments for my son.

Many thanks in advance for your time, everyone, and to those of you here in
the US, I hope you had a good Thanksgiving holiday.
