Hi Catherine I had the same issue before starting at college - whatever you do take your surgeon's advise - take it very easy, ask for a medical note that you can take to college to explain your situation. Take Arnica before surgery and after - good luck I know it's horrible, expect bruising to your torso in addition to swelling to your jaw.
Come back to play slowing and methodically - don't rush in and force yourself to play again as you'll probably cause yourself no end of frustration and pick up bad habits in an effort to just back to playing as quickly as possible. If you can contact your new teacher and explain the situation to them - they might see it as a good opportunity to supervise you rehabilitation completely from scratch - that way you'll be getting expert help and possible iron out a few old problems as well.
