Conventional wisdom is that he started on Raoux-Milleraux (an authentic French horn, as it were, made in France) & then switched to a single horn in B-flat made by Gebr. Alexander. A photo of him wearing white tie & actually playing an Alexander Bb horn is the cover illustration on some of the Dennis Brain albums.
