Sorry, sorry, where are counting problems for the nervous
performer ??? If too nervous, hands off solo playing !! If
counting is a problem in a 4/4 rhythm, hands off solo
playing !! If the "nervous performer" cannot remember the
number of rest measures, he or she should use the music
better instead playing it from memory. = solution no.1.

I cannot imagine ANY other counting problem which could kick
the "nervous" performer out of his track. Well there are
eight, later two, one, nine, four, three, three again, and
once again three measures rest followed by a last time one
measure rest. Where should be the counting problem ? Ooops,
perhaps the one 1/4 rest at the end of the pre last & fourth
last measure, - or what ?

By the way, a metronome M: 1/4 = 72 (72 beats/min. if
conducted or thought in four) would be the average speed,
corresponding to a very easy Andante. The Larghetto (2/2)
stands in "alla breve" signature, about 36-42 1/2
beats/minute which is 72-84 1/4 beats in Andante (4/4). Hope
that helps.

And, if the sixteenths M.24/25 and M.39 might be too (fast)
tricky, why not solving the problem in the classical way by
dissolving the first two groups of four sixteents in each of
these measures by the method two slurred & two tongued as
shown in the second half of M.24 & 25 ? Well, the entrances
with (our F-Horn) f2 might bring problems to the insecure &
nervous player as well as the one octave jump f1 - f2
(upbeat to M.38. But as said before, why playing the piece
if too nervous or with too many other problems ? Some
masochism ???

Hans raises valid concerns, but you, your son, and the
director have the resposibility to make this enjoyable for
everyone involved. I performed that movement, with piano, in
the eighth grade, and did the whole concerto with Fiedler
and the Pops in 1969, with many of the original audience in
attendance.

As simple as that movement is to play, there are some
difficult counting problems that might become problems for a
nervous performer, so use a MMO recording to get used to
having the accompaniment. Also, I strongly suggest limiting
the accompaniment to only include players who can play it
easily. Certainly no more than one on a part. If you follow
this guideline, it will make the performance a great
learning experience, teaching an element of showmanship to
these students willing to participate fully. My experience
with talented young performers is the higher you let them
raise the standards, the higher they push them.

As long as these arrangements are played to entertain
(mainly) hornplayers, I would have no objections, but in a
serious concert or serious school event ??????

The Saint Saens could be published by Kalmus perhaps.

There's also an arrangment of the Saint Saens Romance in F
for horn and band. I can't remember any other details but I
could find out if you wish.

Slightly changing the subject - DbEdition have recently
published a whole set of music for horn ensemble including
my (light hearted) arrangement of the Mozart Rondo K.495.
(Hans, I know you won't approve, but it's a fun piece and
audience's like it)

If they are not available near you, they are certanly
available from Paxman's

All the best,

Lawrence.
