I just stumbled on this little Vivaldi concerto da camera, RV 97. It is
scored for viola d'amore, 2 oboes, 2 hunting horns and basso continuo.
Lovely little cupcake and very delicate, as Vivaldi can often be, except
when the horns are tooting; then it's more like a traffic jam. Coupling
viola d'amore with corni da caccia somehow seems like strange
bedfellows, but it does make for an intense contrast - bull in a china
shop, so to speak. The piece is in F, and not high for the horns. Has
anyone here ever played this? Must be great fun.

might be the oddest.

by King's Consort. This version hasn't got the firepower of the other;
the horns must have been told to behave themselves. They might not be
hunting horns at all.
Either way, lovely stuff all the way through the CDs, if you like the
concept.
