Sorry, Klaus, there are just the unison fanfares at the end
of the first movement, but they are written (in F) f2, bb1,
f2 - and no 2nd space a1 involved. If the f2 should be flat,
finger it with Bb-side 1, but do not forget adjusting the
first slide. It is not too much for the single F Pumpenhorn
(except the very delicate beginning, the very first entrance
- because of the nerves. If done with confidence as a New
Year Call from the main parish church in Linz as thought by
Bruckner, it should be a soloistic piano or just better
mp.). And the other fanfares in the third moement: yes, here
is the a1 amployed but in very fast action (Clemens Krauss &
also Sawallisch & Kubelik did it in ONE), and this fanfare
is very light. If the a1 is fingered 12 - and the slides are
well adjusted - intonation will not be any problem. But this
fanfare is not unison. The last movement has the ff
schmetternd (rimbombando !!!) unison 1/4 triplets written as
c2-g2-e2-c2-g1-c2 but for horn in E-flat. So again no
employment for the a2.

And for what kind of horns did Bruckner write ? He grew up
with the single F used everywhere, the Bb-horn just used by
very, very, very few players as Franz Strauss e.g. And his
symphonies sound beautifully when the pumpenhorns are used,
which are heroic but not as massive as doublehorns can be.
And the wider bore Austrian/Viennese mouthpieces contributed
to the beauty of the sound.

Possibly making a complete fool of myself as I am too lazy
to refer with score or old vinyl (Barenboim/Chicago in my
case, pretty impressive).

As I remember B4, it is the one with the massive unisono
horn fanfares in Bb concert (written F major in the F horn
parts).

This induces a question of mine:

The double horn hardly was common during Bruckner's time,
whereas the single horns in Bb and F were well known. Did
Bruckner expect these fanfares to be played on open Bb
horns?

When I play my 5 valve Hoyer single Bb, I finger the 2nd
space A with 3 (open is too flat, 1+2 is too sharp, 3 is
spot on true). When I play my Conn 28D double, I use the F
side in that register.
