But, Matthew, how can this policy match with the ever-desire & search for the very urtext ?????? This is perfectly inconsequent. Many players sacrifice themselves over a legato bow or some dots, if they are inserted by another hand than the composer, but play string quartets with brass quintet. Some players lament very much, if Schubert´s "Auf dem Strom" is sung in the transposed version, but would play Brittens Serenade with piano accompaniment. Our repertory is so vast, that a replacement (or proper) piece can be found easily. Why not inserting "Radetzky March" in Mozarts Magic Flute, replacing the priests march at the beginning of act two, as it would pep-up the whole thing - just a bit slower played than usual & with a Mozartian touch - as it would match better with the producers intentions, perhaps, who knows ?????? The Radetzky March would benefit by the lighter orchestration, perhaps. ============================================================ =============================================

Of course it is not ideal, but it works well, sounds full enough to be effective and is very good music. By the way, in a recital setting, it matches well with some other Ben Britten works, tenor, horn and piano. A dogmatic approach like I have heard ( "should not be done with piano") only leads to dogmatic playing and repertoire one might miss. Lets hold out for some real issues to completely say no to, rather than leaving out concertos, and rep. such as the Serenade. If my student falls in love with the Britten, why would I not be a vehicle for them to perform it? If the student fails to gather the proper forces( strings), it is my duty to help them make the best possible performance with piano...
