Hi,
For those of you who have my book and for those of you who don't, I
have posted some exercises for working on lip control and flexibility
as per some of our discussions on rolling the lips for flexibility
and range. If you didn't see the discussions it really doesn't
matter. I just wanted to clarify my position on the subject and
supply some exercises and thoughts on how to gain control of your lip
muscles, especially the upper lip muscles.
Your mileage may vary with this, especially if you haven't read my
book, but doing these exercises should increase your awareness of
what is going on inside your mouthpiece. See the Embouchure sample
pages for more.
I am going to be posting addendums to my book from time to time as
well as little things to try and respond to. I won't be mentioning
this again anytime soon, so you can keep an eye on my website. Go to
the Book Samples and Ordering page, look for the Addendum Page link
and go from there. Feel free to print or otherwise use this materiel.
I also enjoy questions, feedback or comments.
Have a good Easter, or whatever.
Sincerely,
Wendell Rider

Isn't the piece on list for the American Horn Competition? Why would they
put
such an inaccessible piece on the program? I guess whomever picked the
pieces didn't care about Messiaen's wishes?

Not that I ever thought Messiaen was a great writer for the horn I would
have
liked to had this music. Its too bad that Leduc has to charge two arms and a
leg for it. Certainly there are better pieces for solo horn?

subject: [Hornlist] Messiaen Interstellar Horn Call

Greetings,
In the preparation for my first performance of the
just the solo Interstellar Call, I felt guilty and
struggled with the decision to perform it out of
context. My first teacher, Glen Swarts, was considered
by Messiaen to be the best interpreter of the Call in
context. So, I asked Glen about it and he felt it was
a difficult decision, but ultimately I had to make the
choice. In rehearsal in the concert hall, I found the
work to be very effective and I went ahead with the
performance. I did give a short speech before I
played. People commented they liked my explanations to
help with their imagination before I played. I did not
have to prepare much for the explanation due to my
experience with Southern Utah and Zion.

I can understand Messiaen's reasoning for wanting it
performed in context. But, after performing it many
times out of context, I find it stands on its own very
well and is stunningly effective. While I would dream
of playing it with full orchestra, the chances for
pieces like that are few and far between. I think it
is more of a reason to be exposed to the piece out of
context.

In my opinion I have not heard any solo horn pieces
that can even sniff the Interstellar Call. I think it
is a great competition piece.

Buy the score, it is worth every penny. 50USD for one
part is worth it. I have yet to be able to afford it,
but at some point I want to own it. I have looked
through the score and it is great.

Matthew Scheffelman
