Hans, that's a very good point you make! When you want to drill out a
mouthpiece, make sure that the bore is still in a good balance with the depth
of the cup, when the throat is drilled out, the throat entrance also has to be
adjusted to be in proportion again, and even in some cases the backbore needs
to be altered, again to maintain balance of the mouthpiece. Most of the time
it's just easier to buy a new piece and sell the old one..

Hello Steve, if the mouthpiece is drilled to a wider bore,
it is ruined in most cases. It might be better to return the
mouthpiece & get another one with the new bore - direct from
the manufacturer.

Would someone kindly explain to me how the numbers used to
describe the bore of a mouthpiece work? I learned that a 25
hole is larger than a 27 hole, but since 25 is not larger
than 27 (smart, aren't I?), I figure it must be some sort of
gauge thing like wire sizes. (I found out about this
because my son's trumpet teacher had him order a mouthpiece
that comes stock with a
27 but he wants him to have it drilled to a 25).

Thanks in advance.
