Hi guys, just to add my tuppence worth...
When we use field papers, we find it really useful to use them in conjunction with OSMAnd. The data you see is the same on the phone and the paper and so, using the gps locator on the phone, points recorded on field papers are that much more accurate. You can even display your feel paper grid over the map in OSMand (it's a bit fiddly, but not too hard). Details, here: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Field_Papers#How_to_use_with_OsmAnd Hope that helps... We are going to map water sources such as taps, Solid waste dumping areas and toilets. But The houses are not so spaced. That is why I was asking The best method that can give us accurancy. I don’t use OSMtracker myself, so not sure the specifics, but if it’s using cell tower location vs. GPS, then it may not be very good in Zambia and will depend on how many cell towers, signal strength, etc. If it uses the phone’s GPS (if it has one) then you should be ok. Field papers is very ‘low-tech’ – basically you’re sketching on a map which you can then upload to trace/edit from – so it’s only as good as the person drawing. You might also think about taking pictures to either use in JOSM, or you can check out Mapillary (https://www.mapillary.com/) so you can have a picture/visual when you get back to the office for editing. In general, I would suggest a workflow such as: - Trace as much ahead of time remotely/using imagery – having major roads, bigger/landmark buildings will help navigate/use Field Papers - Have as many people with OSMtracker or a GPS, etc. recording their tracks – great for getting roads, etc. - Have other people with Field Papers, Mobile collection apps, etc. marking things like business details (things hard/impossible to see from overhead) and taking pictures Then when you go to edit you should use all of the available data to make the best map! Most importantly, have fun! =Russ Russell Deffner Email: russell.deff...@hotosm.org<mailto:russell.deff...@hotosm.org> OSM/Skype: russdeffner Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) Web<http://hotosm.org/> | Wiki<http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Humanitarian_OSM_Team> | Blog<http://hotosm.org/updates> | Contact<http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Humanitarian_OSM_Team#Communication> | Donate<http://hotosm.org/donate> From: Gertrude Hope [mailto:trudyho...@gmail.com<mailto:trudyho...@gmail.com>] Sent: Monday, February 29, 2016 8:54 AM To: Russell Deffner Cc: HOT@openstreetmap.org<mailto:HOT@openstreetmap.org> Subject: RE: [HOT] Fwd: Accuracy ( international women's day) Hi Russ, Thank you for getting back. It sounds like you will be mapping in the field? If so, GPS units are going to be your best bet (unless you have access to professional survey equipment). We often supply our field missions with Garmin Etrex-20 units (http://sites.garmin.com/en-US/etrex/). We also often employ field papers to go along with/in-replacement of GPS (http://fieldpapers.org/). There are also many mobile applications for survey/field-data-collection, I think this is a good place to start: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Software#Mobile_Devices Let me know if that’s not what you’re asking, =Russ From: Gertrude Hope [mailto:trudyho...@gmail.com<mailto:trudyho...@gmail.com>] Sent: Monday, February 29, 2016 8:41 AM To: HOT@openstreetmap.org<mailto:HOT@openstreetmap.org> Subject: [HOT] Fwd: Accuracy ( international women's day) Can anyone tell us The tools we can use for accuracy in Mapping. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: "Gertrude Hope" <trudyho...@gmail.com<mailto:trudyho...@gmail.com>> Date: Feb 29, 2016 5:54 AM Subject: Accuracy ( international women's day) To: <HOT@openstreetmap.org<mailto:HOT@openstreetmap.org>> We are orgainising an event on 8th March women's Day in Zambia.
