Thanks for the replies on this issue.

I realigned the heads and recalibrated the paper first, and then printed 
out their test sheets - I couldn't find
any problems, and subsequent prints no longer showed the issue...

needless to say I ordered the 3 year maintenance package soon after and 
now check every print very
carefully...
