I appreciate the comments as I continue to research this. I suspect
both of you may be right. My experience with Epson has been similar.
With new machines in warranty they generally put someone knowledgable
on the job and follow up until the problem is resolved. As the
machines get older they loose interest and charge through the nose for
service and parts. The idea is to have you replace machines about
every 3 years. With the Z3100, this is HPs very costly intro into the
large format fine art market and they should have every incentive to
establish a competitive reputation for service. The r&d costs were
major with the Z. Much of that reputation is contingent on quality
support. They have one chance to do this right and the time is now or
never. Only time will tell. The first year it should be taken for
granted that they will be all over any problems. If not, they are
going to loose big time. Everybody is watching. They know we are a
fickle bunch and we'll jump ship in a ny minute because we have other
options these days. Canons support so far seems bizarre to say the
least, but their printers are built like tanks. To me, Epson has
stumbled, but still very much in the game.
