The 1/2 inch (bottom) margin is mandated by the automatic duplexer on inkjet printers. The duplexer has to hold enough of the paper at the bottom to pull it back inside to print on the back side. This is regardless of whether the printer is capable of printing fullbleed. HPLIP sets top and bottom margins to be symmetrical in duplex printing to avoid front and back sides have different top and bottom margins. This is because the duplexer rotates the page 180 degrees when printing on the back side and prints bottom to top, whereas, the front side is printed top to bottom. So, bottom margin on the front side will be same as top margin on the back side. This results in a disconcerting effect of the top margin moving up and down in a multiple page document. Raghu

For example inkjet products, when Duplex mode is set the top margin is set to "1/2" inch. Normally the top margin is "1/8" inch. Laserjet products do not have different margins during duplex.
