Mike,
what happens if you run:
su
/etc/init.d/hplip restart
If you are getting the same error, run:
cat /etc/hosts
If you do not see the line:
127.0.0.1 localhost
add it. then restart your network:
su
/etc/init.d/networking restart
and then hplip as per above.
If you continue to see the error message run:
tail -f /var/log/messages
and in another terminal shell restart hplip and post the results in
/var/log/messages.
