I have two HP printers here: a LaserJet 5 (with 12M RAM, JetDirect card, PostScript module, and duplexer) and a Professional Series 2500C (with JetDirect card). Both have worked flawlessly for years under both Red Hat and Slackware. I'm currently running Slackware-11.0 with the 2.6.19.2 kernel, CUPS-1.1.23, and the EasySoftware PrintPro-4.5.12. ESW is no longer supporting PrintPro, and the LJ just stopped printing duplex (as well as sending a blank sheet through after each job).
Just downloaded HPLIP-1.7.4a (and downloaded, configured, built, and installed net-snmp, too). I configured HPLIP to disable scanning and faxing, and to enable CUPS-1.1.x. When I try to configure HPLIP, I fail. Running hp-setup, the daemon finds only one printer: the 2500C. I enter the IP address of the LJ5 manually, but only that printer is displayed, not both. Thinking I'd set up the LJ first (and configure the 2500C after), I press the 'Next' button. The setup wizard then tells me 'error: Printer queue setup failed. Please restart CUPS and try again.' I restart CUPS. Then I see 'error: Unsupported model: HP_LaserJet_5M.' (I was surprised to not find a plain LJ5 in the list of supported devices; the 5M, 5L, 5P, and 5Si are all there, but I have a 1998-vintage 5.) This message was followed by 'error: Printer Error.Printer is busy, offline, or in an error state. Please check the device and try again.' However, the printer is on, idling, and displaying 'READY.' Might the net-snmp.conf file be at fault here? I have no idea how to properly configure it and assumed that HPLIP would do the job for me. Do I uninstall HPLIP and install only HPIPS? Please advise.
