Adam,
To remove hplip you could do:
sudo apt-get remove hplip
which should remove the ubuntu packages. If you still have the hplip source
directory in the directory run: sudo make uninstall
or run sudo rm -rf /usr/share/hplip
HPLIP should then be removed. To re-install use the automatic installer and
you shouldn't have any problems.
Although you may want to try removing the printer queues from
http://localhost:631 and re-adding them with hp-setup. This will probably
fix the problem.

install the latest version of the driver (1.7.4a) and if so do I need to
remove the earlier driver? And if I need to remove 1.7.1 how do I go
about this? I'm still new to linux and enjoying the learning curve.
