Did you manage the problem with printing a borderless photo?
I still fight with the same problem. In my case, the printer is 
connected to a small NAS with a Debian vserver installed.
So it is running as a simple printserver with cups 1.2.7, hpijs and 
hplip 1.6.10 installed.

I can print photos with a small white border. I can set this before 
printing from Windowx XP over IPP.
But if I set to borderless the printer starts with an awful noise like 
if the printhead goes to fast into its endpoint. Then it shows me a 
paperjam errormessage. After all, as you already wrote, it spitts out a 
clean white photopaper.
