I am no USB expert, therefore I can only guess: I know about some reports that this or that particular USB stuff doesn't work for the fast USB2 but works for the slow USB1, e.g. see http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Configuring_Scanners_from_SUSE_LINUX_9.2#USB_Cable_Connection_and_Additional_USB_Hubs Whether or not USB2 is used (or it falls back to USB1) depends on your particular USB hardware on your particular mainboard and on whatever magic in the kernel's USB system. Perhaps the computer where it works uses only USB1? Perhaps the computer where it works has reliable USB2 hardware? Perhaps whatever else...
