When according to
http://hplip.sourceforge.net/supported_devices/laser.html
the parallel port is not supported for the LaserJet 2300,
then it is a bug in HPLIP that the hp backend announces
the device via parallel port nevertheless.

Did you try out this DeviceURI?
Perhaps only the "hp" backend fails via USB but the generic
CUPS "usb" backend works?

This DeviceURI does not work for you.

Regardless that the generic CUPS parallel backend fails to
autodetect the device, this DeviceURI works for you.

By the way:
Perhaps it is a general problem in CUPS 1.2 that its
parallel backend fails to autodetect the device, see
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=264771#c12
starting at comment #12 up to comment #18.

When according to
http://hplip.sourceforge.net/supported_devices/laser.html
the parallel port is not supported by HPLIP for the LaserJet 2300,
then the "hp" backend may not work on any computer via the
parallel port and then it is a bug in HPLIP that the hp backend
announces the device via parallel port nevertheless.

What I try to point out is that this should even work when you
select a PPD file which uses the hpijs driver, e.g. something
like "HP LaserJet 2300 Foomatic/hpijs".

Of course, as you wrote, the traditional Ghostscript driver "ljet4"
for PCL5e printers also works ("HP LaserJet 2300 Foomatic/ljet4").

Kind Regards
