I have an OfficeJet 5510 All-In-One which has been working well under SuSE 10.2. I recently upgraded hplip to version 2.7.6 and saw that in principle, the hp-sendfax function should now work. I therefore tried running hp-sendfax, added a file, added a fax number and, alas, the error message was: error: Unable to communicate with device (code=12): hpfax:/usb/officejet_5500_series?serial=MY42IF13PF96 warning: Device not found Another piece of information, which is undoubtedly is closely related: when I run hp-toolbox, it gives the same error message. Needless to say, the printer prints fine.
