Good Day Anne Jumping from hplip 1.6.12 to 2.7.7 is a big jump. Its probably a permissions issue with how hplip handles usb devices.
You have a couple options at this point. You can keep 2.7.7 or update to 2.7.9. If you can update I would recommend that as the permission changes in 2.7.9 are more user friends compared to 2.7.7. If you want to keep 2.7.7 then please just post back $ hp-check -t and we'll see where your system is at.
