Er, sorry guys, there *is* a 'near' operator already implemented in the new
query parsing/evaluation framework, dated sept/2000 :) Go see it in the CVS
tree.

http://cvs.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/cvsweb.cgi/htdig/htsearch/Attic/?cvsroot=
htdig

The operator allows things like
        "a phrase" near "another phrase" -- near meaning 10 words or less distance
by default, but
        foo near/5 bar near/8 baz -- distance from foo to bar <= 5, from
these to baz <= 8
        (a or b) near c                   -- meaning (a near c) or (b near c)
        (a and b) near c                  -- meaning (a near c) and (b near c)

Ah. If the support is already present in the indices, then it
should not be all that difficult to add support for near/within/
before/after operators to the parser...

It does in 3.2. The only thing lacking at the moment is the search side of
things.

Granted, I suspect Quim could enhance his query parser to deal with a
"near" operator, but I can't speak for him.
