The one potential difference could be bandwidth issues. Although I was using my Mac while the 3.1.6 test was running, it was limited use, very limited indeed... I visited a few web pages and checked my email once.
I'm going to run the test again against all the sites on my development machine (to eliminate the bandwidth issues) to see if the results stand.
Additional info...
While the tests run, I am also:
- running the following applications: Mail, Address Book, Safari, BBEdit, CocoaMySQL, iTunes, Terminal, PackageManager, and Help Viewer
- painting a bedroom wall

PS: Thanks for the descriptions of the db files. Now I have the answers I was looking for and so should the list...

Greetings Ted,
Thanks for your test. I'm both pleased and puzzled by the results... My guess is that there is something about your particular set-up which is different from the default. Could you post your htdig.conf file (with any sensitive details removed)? That may help us to track down the source of the problem. It certainly adds weight to Neal's belief that it is just a bug, not a fundamental database problem, which is very encouraging.
Thanks, Lachlan

I hope this helps with the pending decision.
