Ok, using Lachlan's "time" suggestion, here are the results:

Some of the local sites that I'm indexing serve PDFs but I do not have htdig configured to do anything with them. I don't know where that error is coming from in version 3.1.6. Remember, I am using the default htdig.conf file for these tests with the one exception that I'm changing the start_url to be a handful of sites I have on my local machine.
I hope this helps too...

Contradictory results when run against the same machine.

I haven't been following the whole thread on what's at issue here, but if someone can give me an indication of what we want to test, maybe I could set up a site that tests specifically that issue.
Greetigns Ted,
One simple thing to try is running
% time rundig
which should tell us how much time is spent running code, and how much is
spent waiting for I/O (disk or network).
I also notice that 3.1.6 wasn't indexing .pdf files. Was 3.2.0?
Let me know... (back to painting)
*grin*
