Not really. You could certainly write templates for htsearch that would
output the results as XML--there isn't much tying them to HTML.

Not really. At the moment, htsearch isn't very amenable to an API because
it's more C than C++. On the other hand, cleaning up htsearch is at the
top of the TODO list for 3.2.
