I suggest you carefully read through the online documentation for
ht://Dig at http://www.htdig.org/, paying especially close attention
to the section on Configuration and the FAQ, both indexed in the left
frame on the web site.  Note that htdig indexes by URL, not by file or
directory name, but you can get it to index via the local file system
rather than loading all the documents from the HTTP server.  Have a look
at the start_url and local_urls attributes in the Configuration section.
