Gilles, thanks for the help.. I managed to trace it to a problem with
htmerge and temp space. 

Htmerge core dumped due to insuffcient tmp size.  I searched the htdig 
site for info on this and found one guy who altered words.cc to hardcode
the tmp directory.  I just happened to use this because i needed a quick
and dirty fix.

Other than hacking the source and hardcoding the tmp directory, is there
another way to change which tmp directory htmerge uses?
