If you take a look at the default rundig script, you'll see that it
sets the TMPDIR environment variable, pointing out that it should be
set to some directory with a fair amount of space. This is used by
htmerge directly and obviously requires no hacking.
AFAIK, the TMPDIR environment variable is an informal standard among
UNIX programs. (Emphasis perhaps on "informal.")
