sorry - I haven't really followed the discussion, so I don't know if it already
ended or not. 

I had the same problem and simply altered the htdig.conf by uncommenting the
lowest parts with all these images (button1.gif, button2.gif etc.)

Then I wrote the following into the conf file:

maximum_pages:  10000
next_page_text:         »
no_next_page_text:
prev_page_text:         «
no_prev_page_text:
page_number_text:       
no_page_number_text:    

Now it displays the number of pages and uses the double ">>" for next page and
"<<" for previous page. Works really well.
